Kanubeh village, the Gambia

The village of Kanubeh is around 280km from the coast of the Gambia and the nearest town, Basse, is 15km away.

Kanubeh is home to over 3,000 people with a very high proportion of children.

The main sources of food for the village are couscous, vegetables and groundnuts. The majority of the food is grown by the villagers and there is very little surplus to sell for essentials.

The village is divided up into 57 koridaa, or compounds, each housing extended family groups in between 10 and 20 mud and thatched-roof huts.

Kanubeh has no running water, no electricity and no health services. The villagers have little money, no local jobs and no way of getting themselves out of living in poverty. 99% of the villagers have never had the opportunity to go to school.
